Sachin Khilari clinched a silver medal in the men's shot put F46 final at the Paris Paralympics 2024, with a throw of 16.32 meters. He finished second to Canada's Greg Stewart, who registered a season-best throw of 16.38 meters.
Sachin Khilari secures silver medal for India in shot put at Paralympics
This silver medal takes India's medal tally to 21, surpassing their previous best of 19 at the Tokyo Para Games. India currently holds the 19th position in the medal table with three gold, eight silver, and ten bronze medals.
Two other Indians participated in the men's shot put F46 final - Mohd Yasser and Rohit Kumar. Yasser finished in eighth place with a best throw of 14.21 meters, while Rohit secured the ninth position with a throw of 14.10 meters.
Sachin Khilari, aged 34, created an Area Record with his throw of 16.32 meters. This was also the best performance of his career, having previously won gold medals at the World Championships in 2023 and 2024 and at the Para Asian Games last year. Khilari's silver medal is the eighth for India at the Games this year, in addition to three gold and ten bronze medals.
In the men's shot put final, Sachin was leading after his second throw. However, Greg Stewart overtook him in the third attempt. With a small margin to catch up, Khilari tried his best to surpass his Canadian counterpart but could only achieve a throw of 16.31 meters. In subsequent attempts, Stewart threw his his personal best of 16.38 meters, securing the gold medal in the fifth attempt.
Sachin Khilari was unable to improve upon his best throw of 16.32 meters and ultimately settled for the silver medal. Luka Bakovic won the bronze medal with a personal best throw of 16.27 meters. Two other Indian athletes, Mohd Yaseer and Rohit Kumar, competed in the final but finished in 8th and 9th place respectively, with best throws of 14.21 and 14.10 meters.
