Gold rush continues for India as after Nitu Ghanghas, Saweety Boora grabbed the yellow metal for India in the Women's World Boxing Championship at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on Saturday (March 25).
The three-time Asian medallist Saweety Boora got the better of Wang Lina of China 4-3 in the 81kg final clash via a split verdict to clinch her maiden gold medal.
Saweety put up a stellar show against Chinese pugilist as she kicked off the opening round on a cautious note. She held her moves until the first minute before raining her punches on Wang Lina. Among Saweety's umpteen punches, one landed right at Wang's cheeks. She carried the same momentum throughout the round and sealed it 3-2.
The 30-year-old kicked off the second round on the same note. She displayed her show of patience for an opening before trying to strike Wang Lina. However, Saweety also received a straight jab in the process but the the Indian dominated the second round overall and finally secure the round with the same scoreline.
Wang tried to retaliate in the final round, but the Saweety smartly coserved her energy and saved the best for the last lap. The strategy worked for Saweety as the momentum shifted towards her and eventually officials adjudged her the winner. Nine years ago, Saweety had to settle for a silver when she outpunched some bigwigs to make her way to the final of World Championship. But in a stunning comeback Saweety turned the silver into gold this time around against the 2018 World Champion Wang Lina.
Earlier, Nitu scripted history as she won her maiden gold medal in 48 kg category. Nitu opened India's gold medal account after routing Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan of Mongolia 5-0 in the final clash via a unanimous decision.
