The Undertaker has finally put to rest the general notion that he did retire from wrestling more than once during the course of his WWE career. Following his second WrestleMania loss to Roman Reigns in 2017, The Phenom signaled to the world his retirement by taking off his famous gloves, coat, and hat in the middle of the ring. While the emotional crowd at WrestleMania showed appreciation for Undertaker, he embraced his family and walked up the ramp before he apparently went under the stage in what many believed to be the last spell for the Hall of Famer.
Then Came His Surprise Return
Yet, only one year later, at WrestleMania 34, The Undertaker made a surprise return to WWE and laid claim to John Cena. In the following years, he would appear sporadically until retiring for good following his cinematic victory over AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36 in 2020. Although many think he retired on numerous occasions, The Undertaker insists this was not the case.
Clearing the Retirement Confusion
In an interview with Wrestlerant, The Undertaker tackled one of the beliefs: that he retired more than once. He confirmed that only after the 2020 match did he make an official announcement on his retirement:
"Let me stop you. I didn’t ever really say that I was retired. That was a perception. When I put the boots and the gloves and everything on, I was done, and obviously I got talked out of that for that one match… since I said I was done and retired, I’ve not gone back."
The Undertaker Remains Amazingly Loyal To WWE
A true WWE icon from 1990 to 2020, The Undertaker witnessed the passing of highs and lows, including the very bitter rivalry the company had with WCW during the time of Monday Night Wars. While many who called themselves superstars left WWE during the hard times, The Undertaker stayed loyal. In various interviews, he has revealed why the thought of jumping ship for WCW was never in his mind with the answer relatively simply being, "I made a commitment to WWE and their legacy."
An Always-Staying Legacy
The Undertaker is remembered for his loyalty to WWE and for rolling with the changes of professional wrestling. An unparalleled impact on the business instilled himself within the ring as The Deadman until the last match in The Boneyard. The new information he revealed with respect to his retirement gives added meaning to the very long story of one of wrestling's greatest enduring legends.
While fans are still basking in all the glories he has bestowed upon the WWE, The Undertaker's legacy as a loyal WWE superstar and a foundation stone of professional wrestling history is indubitable.
