In what promises to be a captivating clash of eras, five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand will take on 11-year-old Argentinian sensation Faustino Oro in a special exhibition match on June 1 in Tuscany, Italy.
Anand vs Oro: A Battle Between the Past and the Future
The 55-year-old semi-retired Anand is all set to challenge one of the brightest young stars of the sport in what organizers are calling "a meeting between the past and the future of chess." Oro is because of his great abilities regarded as the "Messi of chess" with Oro yet to be an official teen.
Race of a Prodigy
When Oro Faustino became the youngest-ever International Master last year, created a huge splash. This Argentine talent is only the fourth player to have become an IM before his 11th birthday. The young boy is rising with full speed, currently rated at 2454! Three years ago, in May 2022, he hit 2000 rating for the very first time. Currently, he is preparing to smash through the attainable 2500 barrier-the greatest milestone on the way to becoming the youngest Grandmaster ever.
Somewhat Scenic for Such a Spectacle
This high-profile match is being organized by Unichess and was established under the creative direction of Grandmaster Roberto Mogranzini together with famed tenor and chess aficionado Andrea Bocelli. The exhibition will be held in Pietrasanta within the huge ambit of the "Pietrasanta e Versilia Chess Roads" project.
From June 2 to June 15, the special cultural event Chess Roads will be exhibited. This will comprise of a display of 40 rare and historical chess sets, sourced from both Asia and Europe — with pieces made from ivory, wood, and bronze dating all the way back to the late 1700s.
Broadcast and Follow-up Events
"In order to cast a worldwide spotlight on this corner of Tuscany," in the words of the organizers. The winner shall then go on to face the simultaneous exhibition match ("simul" for short) against 20 selected guests after the Anand-Oro confrontation.
Even though the event is by invitation only and shall gather a very limited congregation of Italian and international chess connoisseurs, Chess.com shall forge the global visibility by streaming the game simultaneously in three languages.
