The Norway Chess 2025 organizers confirmed that world champion D Gukesh, India’s No. 1 Arjun Erigaisi, and world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen will headline the event.

The much-awaited Norway Chess 2025 is set to feature a thrilling clash between world chess champion D Gukesh and Norwegian chess legend Magnus Carlsen. Organizers have officially revealed the final lineup for the prestigious event, which includes some of the world's top chess players such as Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Arjun Erigaisi.

 A Star-Studded Lineup

The Norway Chess 2025 organizers confirmed that world champion D Gukesh, India’s No. 1 Arjun Erigaisi, and world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen will headline the event. The tournament will also feature World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana, World No. 3 Hikaru Nakamura, and China’s top player, Wei Yi, who is ranked No. 9 globally.

Carlsen, who won the 2024 edition of the tournament, will aim to defend his title. The event will take place in Stavanger from May 29 to June 6, 2025.

 New Faces and Returning Champions

In addition to Carlsen, Caruana and Nakamura are returning participants from the 2024 lineup. The exciting new additions for 2025 include Gukesh, the youngest-ever world chess champion, Erigaisi, and Wei Yi. These players will replace Ding Liren, Alireza Firouzja, and R Praggnanandhaa, who were part of the 2024 edition.

Gukesh, at just 18 years old, made history by winning the 2024 World Chess Championship in Singapore, where he triumphed over Ding Liren. As the world No. 5, Gukesh will face formidable opponents in the classical format, including Carlsen, who has been the world No. 1 since 2011 and has previously held the world title five times.

 Women’s Tournament at Norway Chess 2025

The women’s lineup for Norway Chess 2025 has also been announced. India’s top female chess player, Koneru Humpy, will participate in the women’s tournament. Humpy expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s an honour to play in the prestigious Norway Chess Women tournament.”

The reigning world champion, Ju Wenjun of China, won the women’s competition in 2024. Alongside her, India’s R Vaishali, Anna Muzychuk, and Sarasadat Khademalsharieh will compete in the 2025 women’s tournament.

The organizers have assured that reservations are not necessary due to the ample capacity at the venue.
