Wrestlers end protest, Sports Ministers assures, 'WFI chief will step aside till investigation is completed'

The three-day long protest by the wrestlers has finally ended after getting assurance from the Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in the long meeting at his residence on Saturday's midnight that their grievances will be addressed.

 

The Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said gave the update on the development and said, "Union sports minister listened to our demands and has assured us that a proper investigation will be done. I thank him and we are hopeful that a fair probe will be done, hence we are calling off the protest."

 

The minister assured the wrestlers led by Bajrang, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat that the probe on the allegations of sexual misconduct against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) coaches and president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will be completed in a course of four weeks. Anurag Thakur also said that WFI president will step aside till the investigation gets over.

 

“It has been decided that an oversight committee will be formed & names for which will be announced tomorrow. The committee will complete its investigation in 4 weeks & will thoroughly probe all the allegations that have been leveled against WFI & its chief. Oversight committee to give report on issue involving Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in four weeks,” Sports minister Anurag Thakur said.

 

“During the meeting, the players kept their demands & we held a discussion about it. We had issued a notice to Wrestling Federation of India when the allegations were levelled & asked them to respond within 72 hours,” he said.

 

"The committee will investigate all the serious allegations including sexual harassments and financial irregularities. It will be investigated properly and the committee will take further decisions," he further added.

 

Earlier, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formed a seven-member committee to investigate into allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India's chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by country's ace wrestlers.

 

The committee will include MC Mary Kom and Yogeshwar Dutt, archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation of India (IWLF) president Sahdev Yadav along with three others.
