The champion has been dismissive of the idea of sharing the space inside the Octagon with Topuria. Makhachev has been clear from the outset that he wants El Matador to prove his mettle in the division and earn his shot at the gold by taking on a top contender.

UFC Lightweight Fighter Mateusz Gamrot Pays Heed on Potential Ilia Topuria vs Islam Makhachev Fight
Despite being told to make the way through queue, Ilia Topuria has been persistent in his pursuit and is willing to wait rather than fighting for the No.1 contender spot. Fellow Lightweight fighter Mateusz Gamrot has paid heed to the situation and opined that Ilia Topuria indeed deserves the championship bout. However, he does not belive that the Spaniard can topple the Russian.
He does not think that Ilia will have any chance against Islam, should the fight materialises.
“For me, interesting fight but I don’t know. Topuria is a small guy. Islam is a really big guy and I don’t think that Topuria has a chance against him, you know. If you want to fight with Islam, you have to be a big guy, similar like him, because he’s good everywhere but if your body is smaller than his, you don’t have a chance for sure.”
