Touted as a potential replacement for Andrew Flintoff, Luke Wright has carried a great deal of expectation on his shoulders since the former’s retirement. Due to his explosive middle-order batting and medium-fast bowling he has established himself as a regular in the England limited-overs side since his debut in 2007.

While being part of England A and U-19 teams, it has been at Sussex that Wright has truly shone. In 2004 he scored a first-class century in his first match for the county. He was the leading run-scorer in England's domestic Twenty20 Cup in 2007, catching the attention of the national selectors, who then picked him for ODIs against India. His start internationally was challenging as he was tried out in different batting positions: as an opener and down the order. He also played in the 2007 T20 World Cup, although he, and England, did not have a great tournament. But in 2010, he was a crucial contributor to England’s first ever ICC triumph, with some valuable runs and impressive seam bowling. He was picked to play for Pune Warriors India in the fifth edition of the IPL in 2012 but returned to England halfway due to injury. Later that year, he was included in England’s T20I squad for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.
