Jannik Sinner delivers a strong performance to secure a crucial opening win at the ATP Finals.

The Italian shares a respectful message for Felix Auger-Aliassime following the Canadian’s injury setback.

Jannik Sinner’s 2025 ATP Finals campaign got off to a commanding start as the Italian triumphed over Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. The victory marked yet another strong performance from Sinner, who has carried his dominant form from the Paris Masters — where he recently defeated the same opponent to clinch the ATP 1000 title — into the prestigious year-end tournament.

Coming into the ATP Finals, Sinner faced some criticism for skipping the Davis Cup, but his focus on finishing the season on a high appears to be paying off. The Italian looked sharp and composed in his opening match in Turin, capitalizing on his opponent’s injury struggles to secure a vital first win in the round-robin stage.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has been battling physical issues, fought valiantly early on but could not sustain the pace. The Canadian skipped the recent Metz event to manage his fitness, but his condition visibly worsened as the match progressed. Despite a strong start and flashes of brilliance, the match quickly turned one-sided once the injury began to limit his movement.

Sinner’s classy response after victory

In his on-court interview following the match, Jannik Sinner showed both humility and respect toward his injured rival. Reflecting on the contest, he said:

“It was a very tough match. Until the 6-5, I had some chances to break, but he served very well. Only once I missed a return, but he played some aggressive tennis, so I am happy that I overcame a very tough test today.”

Sinner emphasized the importance of securing a strong start at an event as competitive as the ATP Finals.

“Winning the first match is very important in this competition and format. We will see what is coming. I hope it’s nothing too serious, so I wish him a very speedy recovery, and we all hope he is getting back to 100% physically.”

He also acknowledged how difficult it can be to compete against an opponent dealing with injury, highlighting both the mental and emotional challenges of such situations.

“It’s not nice, especially for Felix, who has suffered some very tough injuries, so we only wish him the best.”

With this victory, Jannik Sinner positions himself as one of the top contenders for the ATP Finals crown — a title that would cap off an exceptional season for the Italian.
