Former England football captain Wayne Rooney has hailed tennis legend Serena Williams as one of the most inspiring figures in sports history. 

The former Manchester United star also talked about her record-breaking achievements, barrier-breaking impact alongside sister Venus, and personal resilience, including breastfeeding before matches.

In a recent episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the football legend described Williams as “really inspiring,” particularly to women. He said:

 “I just think Serena Williams is really inspiring. Especially to women as well.” 

The ex-Man United player highlighted her documentaries and the moment she breastfed before competing, noting: 

“I really liked the documentary she’d done and the fact that she’s breastfeeding before she’s going out to play her matches.”

Rooney went on to praise the sisters’ trailblazing role in the sport. He said:

“All the barriers her and Venus had to break down … but getting where we got there was also very inspiring.”

While admiring her on-court dominance, the Reds legend added: 

“I think it’s 23 major titles, she’s won and there’s so many top tennis players, but for me what Serena’s done I think is incredible.”

Williams, who retired in 2022, won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in the Open Era, and transformed women’s tennis with her power, longevity, and cultural influence. She and Venus Williams broke numerous racial and social barriers in the sport historically.
