Rohan Bopanna and Aldila Sutjiadi's journey at the US Open 2024 came to an end on September 4, Wednesday. The Indo-Indonesian duo lost in the mixed doubles semi-final against the American pair of Donald Young and Taylor Townsend in straight sets. The match ended in a one-sided score of 3-6, 4-6.

 

Rohan Bopanna-Aldila Sutjiadi's campaign at US Open ends with semifinal exit

 

Bopanna and Sutjiadi struggled to maintain consistency throughout the match. The American pair broke Bopanna's serve in the first game, putting them on the backfoot early. Although they managed to break back, they were unable to capitalize on the momentum. In the second set, Bopanna's serve was broken again in the fifth game, and that proved to be the turning point for Donald and Taylor.

Bopanna and Sutjiadi had a successful run in the mixed doubles event, winning two third-set tie-breakers to reach the semi-finals. They defeated the fourth seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Matthew Ebden but ultimately fell short against the lower-ranked Townsend and Young.

Earlier in the tournament, Bopanna and Ebden were eliminated in the men's doubles Round of 16. The Indo-Australian pair, who were the Australian Open champions, faced a surprising defeat against the 16th seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andrés Molteni of Argentina. This was a shock as they were expected to be strong contenders for the men's doubles title in New York.

 

In total, four Indians competed in doubles events at the US Open. Sumit Nagal's first-round match with Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan was cancelled due to an injury suffered by Nishioka during his singles campaign.

Bhambri and Olivetti's run in the mixed doubles tournament ended in the Round of 16. They faced a tough loss against the top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. Additionally, N Sriram Balaji was unable to advance past the second round in the men's doubles.

In the men's singles event, Sumit Nagal was eliminated in the first round. He lost to Dutch player Tallon Griekspor.
