Aryna Sabalenka has been knocked out of the Canadian Open in the last 16 after a surprise three-set defeat to Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in Toronto. Alexandrova, the 16th seed, won 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 in a match lasting nearly two and a half hours.
The Belarusian recovered from losing the opening set to take the second, but a double fault while serving to stay in the decider handed her opponent victory. The result marks another setback in a difficult summer for Sabalenka, who exited in the quarter-finals of the French Open and the last 16 at Wimbledon.

Sabalenka has not reached a final since winning the Miami Open in March and is preparing to defend her US Open title later this month. She has been going through a difficult summer as she was knocked out of the quarterfinals and the last 16 in the last two Grand Slams, namely the French Open and Wimbledon.
Meanwhile, Alexandrova will face Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals after the Ukrainian defeated Amanda Anisimova. Sabalenka, who was one of the top favourites at the event, will now prepare for the last major of the year, starting at the end of this month in New York,
