While tennis fans were excited to welcome Carlos Alcaraz after months, Jannik Sinner has announced this unfortunate news that he will not be playing at this year's US Open. Tennis fans will now have to wait longer to watch the Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdraws from US Open; here's why
The World No. 1 has withdrawn from the 2026 US Open after deciding that his right knee injury still requires more recovery time. In a statement posted on X on Friday, the Italian said:
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.”
The tennis sensation added:
“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.”
Sinner, who has not competed since successfully defending his Wimbledon title in July, expressed clear disappointment as the player was looking forward to playing in New York. The 25-year-old had already pulled out of the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters earlier this month to manage the same right knee problem.
Sinner underwent treatment, including shockwave therapy, in a bid to be ready for the final Grand Slam of the year, which begins on 30 August in New York. The withdrawal is a major blow to the US Open field and removes one of the tournament’s leading contenders. Sinner previously won the title in 2024 and reached the final in 2025.
