Barbora Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon 2024 women's singles final.

Barbora Krejcikova claimed a historic Wimbledon 2024 title by defeating Jasmine Paolini in a thrilling three-set final match on July 13. The Czech player, seeded 31st, defied expectations to overcome the higher-ranked Paolini and become the first Czech woman to win singles titles at multiple Grand Slams in the Open Era.

Krejcikova's victory extends Czechia's dominance at Wimbledon, following Marketa Vondrousova's triumph last year. The win is a bitter blow for Paolini, who was aiming to become Italy's first Wimbledon champion but has now suffered consecutive Grand Slam final defeats after losing the French Open earlier this year. Krejcikova's Grand Slam journey began with a remarkable victory at the 2021 French Open. It was her second Grand Slam final and she emerged triumphant. This achievement held added significance as it mirrored the success of her late mentor, Jana Novotna, who won her sole Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 1998.

Krejcikova's Wimbledon victory adds her name to a prestigious list of Czech women's champions at the tournament, including Vondrousova, Kvitova, and her late mentor Jana Novotna. The emotional triumph holds particular significance for Krejcikova, who dedicated her semi-final win to Novotna, her former coach who passed away in 2017. This Wimbledon title marks Krejcikova's second Grand Slam singles title after her 2021 French Open win.

Jasmine Paolini fell short of creating history as she lost to Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon final. The Italian had the opportunity to become her country's first Grand Slam singles champion but was unable to capitalize on it. Paolini's journey to the final was already historic as she became the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon championship match. Her previous Grand Slam final experience, a defeat against Iga Swiatek at the French Open, did not deter her, but she ultimately couldn't overcome Krejcikova's dominance.

The first set was a one-sided affair in favor of Krejcikova. The Czech player's confidence, buoyed by her semi-final win over Elena Rybakina, was evident as she swiftly secured a double break and dominated the set. Paolini fought valiantly but couldn't find a way to disrupt Krejcikova's rhythm.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the second set. Paolini roared back, demonstrating incredible resilience as she leveled the match by winning 6-2. Her aggressive playstyle put Krejcikova under immense pressure, forcing errors from the Czech. The deciding set was a closely contested battle. Both players exchanged blows until Krejcikova gained a crucial break at 4-3. While Paolini valiantly saved championship points, Krejcikova ultimately prevailed, clinching the Wimbledon title. This victory propels her back into the top 10 of the WTA rankings, while Paolini will shift her focus to the upcoming Paris Olympics
