New England Patriots are facing another challenge this offseason after parting ways with veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, as their reported attempt to land a high-profile replacement has fallen short.
Following Diggs’ release, New England explored options to strengthen its receiving corps around franchise quarterback Drake Maye. However, a potential blockbuster move for A.J. Brown now appears off the table after the Philadelphia Eagles declined the Patriots’ trade proposal.
Drake Maye’s breakout season raised expectations
The Patriots entered the offseason riding momentum after a remarkable 2025 campaign led by Maye. In his second NFL season, the former No. 3 overall pick emerged as one of the league’s most productive quarterbacks and played a pivotal role in guiding the franchise back into title contention.
Maye delivered an outstanding statistical season, completing 354 passes for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns with eight interceptions across 17 games. His performance not only placed him among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks but also helped propel New England to a Super Bowl appearance.
A key element behind that success was the offensive support surrounding him. Veteran tight end Hunter Henry and rising receiver Kayshon Boutte both contributed during New England Patriots’ deep postseason run, while Diggs brought veteran leadership and precision to the passing attack.
Patriots move on from Stefon Diggs
Despite his importance to the offense, the Patriots made the unexpected decision to release Diggs as they prepare for the 2026 season. The move immediately created a gap in the receiving unit, particularly for a team built around Maye’s passing efficiency.
With one of his most experienced targets gone, New England quickly became linked to several wide receiver options across the league.
Patriots miss out on A.J. Brown trade pursuit
Among the most prominent names connected to New England Patriots was Eagles star receiver A.J. Brown. Reports indicated that New England was among the teams exploring a potential deal if Philadelphia entertained trade discussions.
According to Philadelphia radio host Anthony Gargano, the Patriots presented a significant offer in hopes of securing the All-Pro receiver.
The proposed package reportedly included a first-round pick and a third-round pick, but the Eagles ultimately declined the deal.
“Howie is holding firm and now you’re seeing teams like Buffalo that were in it [moving on],” Gargano said on Friday.
Another offseason hurdle for New England Patriots
Missing out on Brown represents another setback for New England as it attempts to rebuild its receiving depth. The star wideout has recorded six 1,000-yard seasons in seven years and has been a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s offense since joining the team in 2022.
With Diggs no longer on the roster and a major trade target unavailable, New England Patriots may now need to explore alternative solutions to strengthen the offense heading into the 2026 season.
