Two-time Super Bowl champion Khalen Saunders released ahead of NFL Week 11.

Former Chiefs lineman’s next destination could include a potential Kansas City reunion.

NFL’s unpredictable carousel continues to spin, and this time, former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Saunders finds himself on the move once more. Just months after being traded, the veteran lineman has been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, marking yet another chapter in his rollercoaster career.

Jaguars part ways with Khalen Saunders

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the Jaguars have officially released Saunders. “The Jaguars are releasing veteran DT Saunders, per source,” Pelissero reported. “A two-time Super Bowl champion in Kansas City, Saunders now heads to waivers with a chance to help another contender in a playoff push.”

This decision comes as Jacksonville regroups for the back half of the 2025 NFL season. After a short stint with the team, Khalen Saunders’ tenure in Duval County comes to an abrupt end, leaving the 28-year-old defensive tackle seeking his next NFL home.

From Super Bowl glory to an uncertain future

A third-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, Saunders carved out a role as a dependable rotational lineman during his four seasons under Andy Reid. Known for his strength and agility despite his 6-foot, 324-pound frame, Saunders appeared in 38 regular-season games for Kansas City, posting 81 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and contributing to two Super Bowl victories.

His performance in Kansas City earned him a three-year, $14.5 million contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2023. During his two seasons there, Saunders proved to be a steady presence on the defensive front, logging 100 tackles and 2 sacks across 30 appearances.

However, in a surprising offseason move earlier this year, the Saints traded Khalen Saunders to the Jacksonville Jaguars in August. His time in Florida proved brief and underwhelming. In just two appearances, Saunders registered three assisted tackles and played only 25 defensive snaps, earning a modest 41.3 Pro Football Focus grade.

Could a Kansas City Chiefs reunion be on the horizon?

As the Chiefs emerge from their Week 10 bye, their defensive unit continues to seek consistency in the trenches. With Saunders now on waivers, speculation naturally turns toward whether Brett Veach and the Kansas City front office might consider a reunion with their former draft pick.

While no official discussions have surfaced, Saunders’ familiarity with Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive system could make him a logical fit if Kansas City looks to add depth for a potential playoff run.

What’s next for the veteran lineman

Because the NFL trade deadline has already passed, Khalen Saunders — despite his veteran status — will first go through the waiver process. If unclaimed, he will become a free agent eligible to sign with any team.
