The Dallas Cowboys' already disappointing 2024 season has taken a major blow with the news that starting quarterback Dak Prescott is likely to miss the rest of the year due to a hamstring injury that will require surgery.

Prescott’s injury sets back Cowboys’ season

Prescott, who exited last weekend’s game against the Atlanta Falcons with a hamstring injury, had already been placed on injured reserve, meaning he would miss at least the next four weeks. However, further evaluations have led the Cowboys’ medical team to determine that the injury will require surgery and at least four months of recovery time.

As reported by ESPN, the Cowboys are seeking a second opinion from a specialist, but if that assessment aligns with the team’s diagnosis, Prescott’s season will be over. The loss of Prescott is a devastating blow to a team that has struggled to find consistency this season.

A tough road ahead for Cooper Rush

With Prescott sidelined, backup quarterback Cooper Rush is expected to take over for the remainder of the season. While Rush has filled in admirably in the past, it remains to be seen if he can lead the Cowboys to a playoff berth.

Rush's performance will be crucial, but the team’s prospects don't look promising, especially with Dallas currently sitting at 3-5 and trailing the Washington Commanders by 3.5 games in the NFC East.

The Cowboys will face another tough divisional opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, this Sunday, and things are unlikely to improve in the short term. With upcoming games against playoff contenders such as the Eagles, Texans, and Commanders, Dallas finds itself in a difficult position.

A frustrated locker room

In the aftermath of the loss to the Falcons, Prescott was visibly frustrated, seen on the sideline expressing his disappointment. “We f***ing suck,” he was heard saying to a teammate, which is a concerning message coming from the team’s leader at the halfway point of the season.

While frustration is understandable given the team's struggles, the Cowboys will need to rally around Rush and remain focused on salvaging what’s left of their season.

Challenging games ahead

With Prescott’s future uncertain, the Cowboys' chances of turning the season around will rely heavily on Rush and the rest of the team stepping up.

Between now and their Thanksgiving Day clash with the New York Giants, Dallas will face three crucial matchups against the Eagles, Texans, and Commanders, all of whom are currently in playoff contention. These games will be pivotal in determining whether the Cowboys can stay in the playoff race without their starting quarterback.
