In the 2022 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired the services of WR George Pickens in the second round. He played for them for three long seasons and even established himself as an offensive threat in the league. In the month of May, Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 third rounder and a 2027 fifth round pick.
George Pickens suffers injury at Oxnard Camp
The fans were looking forward to see the 24-year-old wide receiver make his debut for the Cowboys. However, he suffered his first injury scare during the team's training camp in Oxnard, California.
According to the reports, Pickens was practicing reps during day two of the camp. However, he suddenly went to the ground and was surrounded by trainers as they addressed the injury scare. ESPN's Todd Archer shared a photo of the incident on X.com (formerly known as Twitter).
George Pickens looked to suffer from a left calf cramp that had his down for a bit. Was able to walk off on his own.
Fortunately for Pickens, the injury wasn't as serious as he only sustained a cramp in his calf. The Cowboys are still navigating through injuries as it affected their 2024 season under Mike McCarthy.
They finished with a below par 7-10 record that led them to part ways with Mike McCarthy after five long seasons. Brian Schottenheimer was later promoted as his replacement for the 2025 season.
During his three year stint with the Steelers, Pickens notched up 2,841 yards and 12 receiving TDs. He is now expected to form a duo with CeeDee Lamb for the Cowboys' offence, alongside quarterback Dak Prescott.
Brian Schottenheimer has high hopes for George Pickens
George Pickens was labeled as a problem child during his time with the Steelers before being traded in May. However, that not the case with Cowboys as their new head coach Brian Schottenheimer believes in Pickens' ability to shine on the field.
While speaking to the media after Wednesday's training camp, the coach praised the wide receiver and his fit with the team's culture.
When I look at our guys, they're going to always support one another, Schottenheimer said. I'm not even talking about Micah and Trevon, I'm talking about Dak and Joe Milton. Let's talk about CeeDee and George Pickens.
Here's a guy that we get from Pittsburgh that they say is trouble and all those things. From the time he's been here, he's been incredible. Is it me? No. Is it CeeDee? I don't know. But it's the culture that we're building here and so I'm really excited about the family atmosphere we built here, he added.
The Dallas Cowboys have not made it to the Super Bowl since winning the prestigious event back in 1995. Only time will tell whether he can bring back the glory days during Brian Schottenheimer's debut season this year.
