New York Yankees made a quietly intriguing roster move on Saturday, one that could have meaningful implications for their 2025 lineup.
While much of the offseason focus has centered on external negotiations and potential upgrades, Yankees added depth and upside by signing first baseman Nick Torres, a player coming off a breakout season overseas.
New York’s offseason has been relatively subdued, with the organization still linked to outfielder Cody Bellinger and searching for additional offensive help.
First base, in particular, remains an open question following Paul Goldschmidt’s departure. Although Ben Rice remains a candidate for regular at-bats, Yankees’ decision to bring in Torres signals added competition — and opportunity.
Nick Torres’ arrival confirmed by Mexican Club
Torres joins Yankees after spending multiple seasons with Algodoneros Unión Laguna in Mexico. The club officially announced his departure and new opportunity with a heartfelt message, writing:
“Thank you, Nick Torres, for every game, every delivery, and every thrill you gave us,” the team wrote. “For the way you have connected with the fans, for becoming a reference, an idol, and one of the most beloved players of this house.
“Your time with the Revolución leaves a mark on the diamond, in the stands, and in the hearts of our people. Today it’s your turn to keep growing and fulfill one more dream, now with New York Yankees organization. It fills us with pride to see you take this step and take your talent to a new stage. La Laguna and Algodoneros will always be your home. Thank you, Nick.”
A bat that demands attention
Nick Torres has played in Mexico since 2021 and is coming off a standout season at the plate. Last year, he posted a .345 batting average while blasting 27 home runs and driving in 81 runs, showcasing a level of offensive production that far exceeded his previous stateside results.
Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, Torres last appeared in affiliated baseball at the Triple-A level in 2018, when he struggled offensively. Since then, his development path has taken a dramatic upward turn.
Opportunity knocks in the Bronx
While the signing may not generate immediate headlines, Torres could be positioned for a meaningful role if his bat translates during spring training. With first base unsettled and roster flexibility still in play, New York Yankees will give him a legitimate opportunity to compete for a spot.
If Nick Torres carries his recent offensive surge into camp, the Bombers may have uncovered a low-risk, high-reward addition capable of impacting the lineup sooner than expected.
