Following their recent run to the World Series, the New York Yankees are faced with replacing a crucial member of their lineup. Infielder Gleyber Torres has agreed to terms with the Detroit Tigers on a one-year deal for the 2025 season, worth $15 million, as reported by ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Torres had played the 2024 season under a one-year, $14.2 million contract after avoiding arbitration. In February, he expressed his desire to stay with the Yankees long-term, saying, “I want to be a Yankee for life.” However, despite finishing the season strong, the Yankees opted not to retain him.

In 154 regular-season games in 2024, Torres posted a .257 batting average with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs. His performance improved after the All-Star break, earning him a spot at the top of the Yankees' lineup, where he hit .292 during the second half of the season. In the postseason, Torres hit .241, adding two home runs and eight RBIs, but the Yankees ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, losing the series 4-1. Throughout his career, Torres has compiled a .265/.334/.441 slash line in 888 games, totaling 138 home runs, 441 RBIs, 460 runs scored, and 53 stolen bases. From Cubs' Farm System to Yankees: Torres' Career Journey
Torres' journey to the Yankees began in the Chicago Cubs' farm system, where he spent two and a half years before being traded to New York in 2016. He made his major league debut with the Yankees in 2018 and quickly made an impact, earning back-to-back All-Star selections in his first two seasons.
However, after a hot start to his career, Torres’ production began to plateau, leading to trade rumors and questions about his defensive abilities, particularly at second base. Despite these challenges, Torres showed in the second half of 2024 and throughout the playoffs that he could still be a valuable contributor in the right circumstances.
