Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene had to leave the field against Atlanta Braves on Wednesday during the fourth inning of the game. It was later revealed that the 25-year-old has suffered a right groin injury.
What exactly happened to Hunter Greene?
The Reds were leading the game 4-0 but the match had to be stopped due to Greene's discomfort. The team's staff and manager, Terry Francona had to help Greene as he was escorted off the field and was given immediate medical assistance.
Further medical tests will be held on Thursday and it is still unclear whether he will be out for long term or not. During the Reds' 4-3 victory over the Braves, the pitcher had six strikeouts, two hits and zero walks at the Truist Park.
In the top of the fourth, my first two warmup pitches I felt my groin grab so I just didn’t feel like I would be at my best or really honestly keep my team in it continuing to throw if I stayed in. So that was the decision, Greene said via APNews.com.
After the match, Greene mentioned that there were no issues that needed further medical assistance. But, following the injury concern, the player and the Reds decided to take it easy.
Francona believes that the test result won't be negative as the player described his injury. Greene has a long list of injury issues which he has faced in the past three seasons.
During the 2022 season, Greene suffered from a right shoulder strain and had to miss six weeks action. In 2023, he had a brief stint on the COVID-related list. In the last season, he suffered a right hip injury. He missed the action from August 14 to September 22 as he was suffering from elbow soreness.
Hunter Greene on his upcoming test reports
The Reds pitcher is hoping that he doesn't have to miss much of the action but he is concerned about his groin injury. When he was asked about his high pitch count of 114 this season had anything to do with his current injury, Greene said via Cincinnati.com.
“I don’t think so. I felt fantastic all the way up to that last pitch. The recovery was great this past week going into tonight. I’d be really surprised if that had any correlation to tonight. I don’t think it did.”
The player and the franchise are waiting for the test reports. They are hoping that the injury is not too series as they want him to avoid long IL stint amid the race in regular-season games.
