The Boston Red Sox will be welcoming Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 1 on Friday, July 25th at the Fenway Park, Boston. All eyes would be on star player Mookie Betts, whether he starts Game 1 against his former team Boston Red Sox or not.
Will Mookie Betts start against Los Angeles Dodgers?
According to Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Mookie Betts will not be featuring in Game 1 against the Boston Red Sox. His transition to shortstop started well but it has been on a decline since June. Roberts then moved him to leadoff spot ahead of Shohei Ohtani, in order to help him break his slump.
However, after winning Wednesday's clash against the Minnesota Twins to clinch their three game series, Roberts said Betts is still not there despite his key single walk-off win in the series finale. While he has gone for 3-for-17 since making his move to leadoff spot, Roberts mentioned that the All-Star could miss the Friday's clash against his former team.
I know there’s some things going on personally for him, so I’ve got to talk to him. We’ll see if he’s going to be there for the Friday game. There might be some things going on that he might not be around, that he’s got to deal with personally. But everything is OK with him, so we’ll see.
Dave Roberts on Mookie Betts new role in hitting lineup
Mookie Betts is on a career worst .238/.311/.373 this season but has stepped up his game in the last four matches as he notched up three runs, one double and two walks as a leadoff hitter.
I think he’s still not right mechanically, clearly, Roberts said. I do know it hasn’t affected Shohei, so that’s a good thing. And I do think getting Mookie on base sets the stage.
I still like the mindset of being a table setter and finding a way to get on base anyway he can, to get that on-base (percentage) up. And then the hits will start coming, the slug, all that stuff. But I think it looks right. I like it.
A trip to Fenway Park could prove crucial for Mookie Betts in the second half of the season in order to regain his confidence as the three time World Series winner had some of the best moments at the ballpark during his stint with Red Sox.
