India’s T20 World Cup 2026-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav is not confirmed to lead the side in the next edition of the tournament. As per a report by TOI, Suryakumar will lead the side in UK T20Is (Ireland and England) but a call on him keeping the leadership role will be taken on the basis of his performances as a batter.

"Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

India's first T20I series after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will be on Irish soil. India will play two T20I in June end. Then, they will tour England where they will play a five-T20I series. Later in July, India will tour Zimbabwe for a three-T20I series.

India’s T20I captaincy options

In the T20 World Cup 2026, Axar Patel was vice-captain. Axar is yet to take DC to playoffs as captain. Other option is Shreyas Iyer who has been away from the T20I squad since December 2023. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL 2024 triumph and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final where they lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Also, existing part of India T20I squad, Ishan Kishan is a captaincy candidate too. Kishan led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) tournament and is currently leading Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Pat Cummins’ absence. India’s T20 World Cup hero Sanju Samson can lead as well but he has been playing under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy at Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
