Aaron Boone is officially returning to the Bronx for another season as the manager of the New York Yankees. The club announced on Friday morning that they have exercised the option in Boone’s contract, extending his tenure for the 2025 season. Boone, 51, led the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 2009, despite a challenging defeat in the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Boone’s leadership acknowledged by the Yankees

In a statement released by the team, Boone expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him to lead one of Major League Baseball’s most storied franchises.

“I am grateful for the trust placed in me to lead this team,” Boone said. “It’s a responsibility and an opportunity that I will never take lightly. It’s a great privilege to show up for work every day and be surrounded by so many determined and talented players, coaches, and staff members.”

Boone also emphasized the shared commitment to excellence within the Yankees organization, noting his excitement to begin preparations for the upcoming season.

“Starting with the Steinbrenner family, there is a collective commitment to excellence within this organization that is embedded in all that we do. I’m already looking forward to reporting for spring training in Tampa and working tirelessly to return the Yankees to the postseason to compete for a World Championship,” he added.

Criticism and controversy over Boone’s decisions

Despite the excitement surrounding Boone’s return, there had been significant external pressure regarding his future after the Yankees' World Series loss. Some critics pointed to Boone’s strategic decisions during the series against the Dodgers as pivotal factors in the Yankees' defeat. However, sources close to the situation, including SNY's Andy Martino, indicated that the front office had already made plans to keep Boone in charge for the 2025 season.

Boone’s success and future with the Yankees

Since taking over as the job of the manager in 2018, Boone has posted a 603-429 record, guiding the Yankees to three American League East titles and a pennant. Though Boone has yet to break the team's 15-year title drought, the organization remains confident in his ability to lead them back to championship contention.

"Aaron is a steadying presence in our clubhouse and possesses a profound ability to connect with and foster relationships with his players,” Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman stated. “Consistently exhibiting these skills in such a demanding and pressurized market is what makes him one of the game’s finest managers. Our work is clearly not done, but as we pursue the ultimate prize in 2025, I am excited to have Aaron back to lead our team."

While Boone’s current contract has been extended for the 2025 season, Cashman has left the door open for a potential contract extension following discussions at the recent General Manager Meetings.
