2025-26 NBA season has officially marked the end of an era. After 21 remarkable seasons, Chris Paul has stepped away from professional basketball, closing the chapter on one of the most accomplished point guard careers in league history.

The 40-year-old veteran was waived by the Toronto Raptors on Friday after being acquired in a three-team trade ahead of the Feb. 4 deadline. Shortly after the move became public, Paul confirmed his retirement in an emotional Instagram post that resonated across the basketball world.

Paul addressed fans directly, reflecting on the magnitude of his decision and the emotions that followed.

“This is it! After 21 years I’m stepping away from basketball,” Paul wrote. “As I write this, it’s hard to really know what to feel, but for once — most people would be surprised — I don’t have the answer lol! But, mostly I’m filled with so much joy and gratitude! While this chapter of being an ‘NBA player’ is done, the game of basketball will forever be engrained in the DNA of my life.”

Known globally as “The Point God,” Chris Paul leaves behind a legacy built on elite playmaking, defensive tenacity, and consistency. He retires as the 2006 Rookie of the Year, a 12-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA selection, and nine-time All-Defensive Team member.

He ranks second in NBA history in both assists and steals, trailing only John Stockton, and became the first player ever to record at least 20,000 points and 10,000 assists. In 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Though an NBA championship eluded him, Paul reached the 2021 NBA Finals with the Phoenix Suns and played for eight franchises across his storied career.

Among the first to publicly respond was Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, a friend and contemporary whose journey has long been intertwined with Chris Paul’s.

“HELLUVA CAREER CHAMP! CONGRATULATIONS 🙏🏾✊🏾” LeBron James wrote in the comments section of Paul’s post.

Their bond dates back to the early 2000s, with both future Hall of Famers entering the NBA within two years of each other. They also captured Olympic gold medals together for Team USA in 2008 and 2012, cementing their legacy not only as rivals but as teammates on the global stage.

As Paul steps away, he leaves behind a career defined by excellence, leadership, and an enduring impact on the game.
