The Dallas Mavericks received unfortunate news about star player Anthony Davis' injury ahead of the upcoming 2025 NBA season. With the 10-time All-Star, health has always been a major concern which has been limiting his time on court. Earlier, Davis had suffered an abductor strain in his Mavericks debut.
The ten-time NBA All-Star later underwent eye surgery to repair a detached retina. Jason Kidd’s side traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 32-year-old this year in a blockbuster trade which shocked not just the NBA industry but the whole sports fraternity.
Will Anthony Davis return for the Mavericks’ opener?
Last year, Davis played only nine games for the Mavericks and the franchise expected to begin the upcoming season with him pairing alongside No.1 pick Cooper Flagg. However, they now have to wait a little longer to see the Chicago, Illinois native back on court.
As per reports, his presence for the opener is uncertain as the player is coping with eye surgery. The NBA champion is waiting to recover fully and has not seen much work on the court, which is not a good sign just ahead of the 2025 season and training camp, just a couple of weeks out.
The franchise has been suffering ever since the surprising trade; first, getting off the playoff contention following Davis’ injury in the first game, then their point guard, Kyrie Irving, tore his ACL. The Western Conference side then drafted Duke superstar Cooper Flagg as their No. 1 pick which was a huge relief for the fans after losing Doncic, their star player.

However, the Mavericks are left with huge concern following AD’s ongoing injury. The franchise is forced to rely on the rookie as they wait for Davis and Irving to return to the game. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are set to kick off their pre-season against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first week of October at the Dickies Arena. The team based in Dallas will open their season on Wednesday, October 22, at the American Airlines Center against the San Antonio Spurs.
