The 32-year-old forward sees her name on the team's injury report ahead of Friday's clash. This is the first match that the Golden State Valkyries will be playing after the All-Star break. Thornton will be missing the first game as she has been listed out for the encounter against the Wings.
The Golden State's X (formerly known as Twitter) account announced the news on Thursday.
Golden State Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton is undergoing evaluation for a lower leg injury. She will not play in tomorrow’s contest against the Dallas Wings, the caption read.
In the All-Star game, Thornton played for Team Clark as she made her first appearance on Saturday. She clocked 25 minutes as she impressed everybody with her talent on the court. She managed to notch up a double-double, with 15 points and 11 assists. Not just this, she even managed to set a record for most number of assists provided during an All-Star game.
The injury that Thornton sustained has no exact date as of now, but she's set to undergo tests soon to determine how serious her injury is. Her date of return will be announced once the report for the tests are on. Until then, the team can only pray as they have a tough road ahead after their match against the Dallas.
The Valkyries will then take on the Sun, Dream, Mystics and Sky, before wrapping the road trip in Nevada against the Aces.
Having started all the 22 games for the franchise this season, the former Liberty forward's absence would be felt. She has been the guiding light for the franchise as she averages 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. She has helped the team put up a strong fight in their debut campaign, as they are currently ninth in the standings with a 10-12 record to their name.
The Golden State Valkyries have been winless in their last three games and will be looking to bounce back against a struggling Dallas Wings team. With Thornton sidelined, Janelle Salaun, Laeticia Amihere and Cecilia Zandalasini will get minutes under their names.
