Fever continue to struggle with mounting injuries, including Caitlin Clark’s lingering groin issues.

The Indiana Fever’s season took another painful hit on Sunday as forward Sophie Cunningham went down with a scary injury during their matchup against the Connecticut Sun. The 29-year-old had to be helped off the court in the second quarter after an awkward collision with Bria Hartley, who inadvertently fell into Cunningham’s leg.

Cunningham immediately grabbed her knee in visible pain before trainers assisted her to the locker room. The team later confirmed that she would not return to the game, dealing yet another blow to an Indiana squad already riddled with injuries.

Injury concerns pile up for Indiana Fever

The Fever entered the season with high expectations, especially with young stars and veteran additions expected to boost their playoff hopes. Instead, the campaign has been overshadowed by a string of untimely injuries.

Sophie Cunningham, who has been a consistent contributor this year, was averaging 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.2 assists across 29 appearances before Sunday’s setback. Her versatility and scoring punch have been crucial for Indiana’s rotation, making her injury particularly concerning at this stage of the season.

Indiana’s injury list is already long. Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald have both been ruled out for the remainder of the season. On top of that, Caitlin Clark, the Fever’s biggest star, has struggled to stay healthy as well. Clark has appeared in just 13 games this season, missing significant time with quad and groin issues. She even aggravated her groin injury again during a July matchup against the Sun, casting further doubt on her availability moving forward.

Another storm to weather

While the full extent of Cunningham’s injury is still unknown, the timing could not be worse for the Fever. Already battling depth issues, Indiana will now be forced to adjust without one of their reliable contributors.

The Fever’s coaching staff will be hoping for positive news in Sophie Cunningham’s evaluation, but the possibility of her missing extended time raises serious concerns about the team’s ability to remain competitive.

Injuries have derailed what was meant to be a turning point season for the franchise. Should Cunningham be sidelined for weeks, Indiana will once again have to rely heavily on role players to fill the void, a tall task in the competitive WNBA landscape.
