Sophie Cunningham urges WNBA media to prioritise basketball amid ongoing controversy
Speaking to reporters before practice at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Cunningham said:
“The WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything except basketball. What are we doing?”
She added that while off-court stories can help fans connect with players, “we gotta keep the main thing the main thing.”
The Fever star’s remarks come after weeks of intense media attention surrounding comments she made about transgender athletes in women’s sports. In remarks reported by ESPN, Cunningham expressed support for protecting young girls in locker rooms and said they should not have to compete against biological males.
Cunningham later described the stance as “common sense.” The comments sparked debate across the league, including public responses from figures such as Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve and demonstrations outside several Fever games.
Cunningham has described the resulting coverage as a distraction from the high level of play currently on display in the WNBA. She has stated that she wants to return to basketball. She continues to contribute off the bench for the Fever, who have been among the league’s higher-scoring teams this season.
