Sophie Cunningham wasted no time making her presence felt in the preseason.

The 28-year-old guard has spent the first six years of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury, who drafted her in the second round.

The Indiana Fever have made some crucial offseason moves, hoping to bolster their roster and offer Caitlin Clark a more robust supporting cast as they aim to build on last season’s 20–20 record. One of the notable additions to the team is Sophie Cunningham, acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Mercury.

Sophie Cunningham has been the talk of the town and grabbing all the eyeballs since her arrival.

Cunningham’s Impact in the Preseason

Sophie Cunningham wasted no time making her presence felt in the preseason. In the opening game against the Washington Mystics, the seventh-year WNBA veteran scored 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out two assists, showcasing her all-around skills.

She continued her strong performance in the next game, contributing six points, three rebounds, and one assist in a match against the Brazil national team. In Saturday’s preseason finale, Cunningham added five points, two rebounds, and one assist. Unfortunately, she exited the game with an ankle injury, but reassured head coach Stephanie White that she’d "be fine."

A Positive Outlook from Cunningham

Despite the injury scare, Cunningham seemed upbeat after the game. She took to TikTok, posting a video in which she mentioned that she doesn’t have a boyfriend but wouldn’t mind finding a man to take care of her.

She playfully captioned the post: "Lol but like I wouldn't mind a man to take care of me too ya know? #fyp."

A Strong WNBA Career So Far

The 28-year-old guard has spent the first six years of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury, who drafted her in the second round (No. 13) of the 2019 draft. Cunningham’s best season came in 2022 when she averaged 12.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Her consistency and ability to contribute in various aspects of the game have made her a reliable asset.

Cunningham’s Role for the Fever

Sophie Cunningham is expected to play a pivotal role for the Indiana Fever this season. In Saturday's preseason finale, head coach Stephanie White experimented with the lineup, giving Cunningham the starting position over DeWanna Bonner. Cunningham’s versatility and strong performances thus far suggest she will be an important piece in the Fever's plans for the upcoming season.
