Australia batter Travis Head proved to be too good for the opposing England bowlers and smacked them all around the Optus stadium to bring up his century in just 69 deliveries. This is the left-hand batter's tenth century in Test cricket and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Baggy Greens. With them being in a run-chase of 205, the hundred has seen them get within touching distance of the target on Day 2 itself.
While most of the batters failed to play well on the bowler-friendly pitch in Perth, the 31-year-old took charge and went on to play a memorable knock. Head scored 12 boundaries and four towering sixes to reach triple figures and also went on to equal David Warner on the list of fastest centuries scored by Australians in Test cricket.
Fastest centuries scored by Australians in Tests -
1. Adam Gilchrist - 57 deliveries
2. Jack Gregory - 67 deliveries
3. David Warner - 69 deliveries
4. Travis Head - 69 deliveries
5. Jimmy Sinclair - 75 deliveries
Head reaches another milestone with the knock
Head once again rose to the occasion and proved why he is one of Australia's most important Test players with this knock. He also went on to complete 4000 Test runs with the hundred as the England bowlers failed miserable to stop the run-flow. This is Head's first Test century of the year as his previous one came in December when he played a sensational inning of 152 runs at the Gabba.
Australia favourites to win
Meanwhile, Australia began their chase of 205 on a strong note as openers Head and Jake Weatherald formed a robust stand of 75 runs. They provided the hosts with a much-needed strong stand and neutralized all the pressure that the England bowlers were trying to build. Weatherald soon went on to lose his wicket for 23, but that didn't stop Head from punishing the opposing bowlers. His incredible knock has left Australia on the verge of victory in the first Test.
