Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has slammed Pakistan media outlets for falsely attributing a quote which says that India are ‘perpetual loser’ for handshake snub after the T20 Asia Cup 2025 game on September 14. Ponting who is also Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach, said that he has made no public on the ongoing Asia Cup whatsoever.
“I am aware of certain comments being attributed to me on social media,” Ponting posted on his social media accounts.
“Please know that I categorically did not make those statements and indeed have made no public comment about the Asia Cup at all.”
The media outlets had claimed that Ponting had weighed in on the controversy in his comment on Sky Sports.
“This match will be remembered forever with India as the big loser. The way the Pakistani team wanted to shake hands at the end has immortalised them as champions of the gentleman’s game with India as the perpetual loser,” said the quote falsely attributed to Australia great.
ICC rejects PCB's unrealistic demand
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had written a complaint to the ICC, demanding removal of match referee Andy Pycroft from the upcoming matches of the T20 Asia Cup 2025. ICC rejected PCB’s demand as Pycroft had little to do with what transpired at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Also, a few Asian Cricket Council (ACC) officials, including PCB director International Cricket were aware of it beforehand.
How Pakistan's propaganda was exposed
D-Intent Data took snapshots of the comments and shared its analysis of Ponting’s fake quotes being circulated on social media.
“FACT: Pakistan-based propaganda accounts are circulating false claims alleging that Ricky Ponting, on Sky Sports, said: “This match (#INDvsPAK) will be remembered forever with India as the big loser ...,” the account said.
“These claims are completely fabricated. The ongoing Asia Cup 2025 is broadcast globally via the Sony Sports world feed, which provides the official commentary for all broadcasters. Ricky Ponting is not part of the Sony Sports commentary team for this tournament.
“There is also no credible evidence that Sky Sports has its own separate commentary panel for the Asia Cup 2025 or that it is broadcasting the event. In fact, Sky Sports’ event schedule does not include any Asia Cup matches.
“INTENT: Propaganda accounts are circulating false and self-invented claims about Ricky Ponting to set their narrative against India over the recent cricket match between India and Pakistan.”
