Team India succumbed to a six-wicket loss in a must win Super Four encounter against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 6) which has pushed them to the brink of Asia Cup 2022's ouster.

The result left India at the mercy of the other teams to have a chance of making it to the final. It also meant that India skipper Rohit Sharma's scintillating 41-ball 72 went in vain, as the islanders completed a chase of 174 with a ball to spare.

Needing 21 in 12 balls, Sri Lanka scored 14 runs off the penultimate over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, almost sealing it in their favour. India will be out of the tournament if Pakistan beat Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Despite their back-to-back defeats, Rohit, at the post-match press conference, said that the India-Pakistan final would happen when a journalist posed the question. Rohit hilariously replied and said, “Hoga na, kyun tension le rahe ho (Don't worry, it would happen)".

“I was happy with three seamers. Unfortunately Avesh hasn’t turned up well in the fitness tests. He didn’t respond well because he was quite sick. Ideally the combination we would play is four seamers, but three seamers was something we wanted to try before the World Cup,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.

“We need to find answers as a team, like where we are with five bowlers. We know now where we stand with this combination,” he added.

Rohit rued that his side was 10-15 runs short while batting. “We just ended up on the wrong side, as simple as that. We could have capitalised on the first half of our innings. We fell 10-15 runs short. The second half wasn’t good for us.
