After Asia Cup title win, India one win away from dethroning Pakistan in ICC ODI rankings

Rohit Sharma-led India beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Asia Cup 2023 final to close in on the top position currently occupied by Pakistan in ICC ODI Rankings.

Rohit Sharma-led India completely outclassed defending champions Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final to win their eighth title. Despite the 10-wicket win after bundling out Sri Lanka for a score of 50, India could not claim the top spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) men’s ODI team rankings. 
 

After the win at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, India have 115 rating points, the same as Pakistan. India are followed by Australia who suffered a 112-run defeat to South Africa in the decider of the five-ODI series in Johannesburg. Australia have 113 points followed by the Proteas with 106 points. 
 

Reigning ODI World Cup champions England have 105 rating points after their 3-1 series win over New Zealand who they will face in the World Cup 2023 opener on October 5. 
 

Before the World Cup, India and Australia have a chance to dethrone Pakistan. India will play Australia in a three-ODI series starting September 22. A win in the first ODI will see India reach the top. In order to retain the top spot, India will need to beat Australia in the ODI series.
 

Similarly, Australia will have a chance to regain the top ranking if they beat India in the three-ODI series. Pakistan will retain their top spot even if India lose to Australia by 1-2. In case of a whitewash, Australia will climb to the top spot whereas India will slip to third position. 
 

Recently, Babar Azam-led Pakistan were knocked out of Asia Cup 2023 after they lost their Super Fours clashes to India and Sri Lanka. 
 

Meanwhile, India, Pakistan, and Australia are yet to announce their final squad for the World Cup. All three teams are struggling with key players getting injured ahead of the marquee tournament. 
 

Also, India and Australia are yet to announce their squad for the ODI series. The first ODI will be played in Mohali on September 22. The second ODI will be played at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore on September 24. The final ODI of the series will take place at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on September 27.
