Vaibhav Sooryavanshi couldn't make it to India's playing XI in all the five T20Is against West Indies

India captain Shreyas Iyer has now come up with an advice for the 15-year-old wonderkid

As Team India prepares for its upcoming assignment, a pressing question looms over the selection table: will teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continue to cool his heels on the sidelines during the T20I series against New Zealand? Having endured a frustrating campaign during the recently concluded five-match home series against the West Indies, where he sat out of all the five matches, the young left-hander’s wait for regular game time has sparked widespread debate.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi get his chance on New Zealand tour?

While selectors and team management view him as a generational talent for the future, the immediate arithmetic of the playing XI makes his inclusion an uphill battle. With team management backing incumbent openers in Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson and prioritising established combinations, Sooryavanshi’s path into the starting lineup looks blocked for the time being.

Shreyas Iyer’s advice to Sooryavanshi

The five-match T20I series against the West Indies, which ended in a tense 2-2 draw after the final encounter was washed out, served as a stark reminder of Sooryavanshi's current situation in the squad. Despite being named in the the squads, the 15-year-old did not get a single game, spending the entire series on the bench.

Addressing the youngster’s omission and growing public chatter, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer offered clarity and words of wisdom during the post-series media interaction. Reassuring the young batter, Iyer stated:

"I just keep telling him, you will get your opportunities. You see, there are two batters who have won matches for you, and they’ve been consistent with the run-scoring as well... You have to wait sometimes, and we’ve got two fantastic openers who have been consistent throughout. So, if you are consistent with your processes and your mindset is a bit light, don't think too much about getting an opportunity right now," Iyer said after the India versus West Indies fifth T20I.

Selection Dilemma: Accommodating Sooryavanshi and Samson

The primary roadblock for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion is the fierce competition at the top of India’s batting order. Accommodating both Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson simultaneously has proven exceedingly difficult for the team management.

While Sooryavanshi offers explosive left-handed firepower at the top, the team management has consistently leaned toward experience, primarily preferring Sanju Samson alongside Abhishek Sharma as the preferred opening combination. Samson's status as a proven match-winner and his role within the setup mean that benching him to blood the teenage sensation remains a tough call for the selectors, especially in tight bilateral series where momentum is paramount.

Consequently, Sooryavanshi finds himself locked in a high-stakes battle for a spot, requiring immense patience as he waits for tactical openings or rotational rest periods for senior players.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s International Career: Stats and Match Log

Despite his tender age, Sooryavanshi has already broken numerous records since bursting onto the international scene. Making his T20I debut for India against England in July 2026 at the age of 15 years, he etched his name in history as the youngest player to represent the country.

Total T20I Matches Played: 8 matches
Career Runs: 246 runs, 2 fifties
Batting Average & Strike Rate: Striking at a breathtaking 186.36

He has notched up 2 half-centuries in his short career, famously becoming the youngest male player to score a T20I fifty (50 off 19 balls against Zimbabwe) and recording a highest score of 81. His last international appearance came during the Asian Games final against Pakistan, where he chipped in with a brisk 15 off 9 balls.

Sanju Samson’s performance amidst 'Sooryavanshi' debate

As questions surrounding Sooryavanshi’s lack of game time grow louder, Sanju Samson has answered his critics with consistent performances at the top of the order.Throughout the recently concluded five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Samson was a central figure in India's batting blueprint. He accumulated 168 runs across the 5 matches, maintaining a healthy average and anchoring the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma (who added 145 runs). Samson registered two fluent half-centuries in the series, including a blistering 56 off 20 balls in the high-scoring clash, justifying the team management's faith in his abilities.

'Maybe in a series where Sanju isn't there or is rested, Sooryavanshi will play'

Meanwhile, former India's assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has weighed in on young prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s current exclusion from India’s T20I lineup, suggesting the teenager must exercise patience. Speaking on JioHotstar's show Out or Not Out, Nayar emphasised that team harmony and tactical stability must take precedence over rushed selections, noting that erratic team changes could harm both the dressing room culture and the youngster's long-term development. He pointed out that management will likely urge the 15-year-old to bide his time, with a debut or extended run more probable during a bilateral series where senior players like Sanju Samson are rested.

"Often, for a team's culture, if you are a coach or a captain, it is crucial to make the right decisions. If you make haphazard decisions, the impact on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's career is one thing, but the impact on team culture will be far greater. So, according to me, the decision will be, 'Vaibhav, wait for your time, you will also get opportunities.' Maybe in a series where Sanju isn't there or is rested, he will play," Nayar said.

Beyond squad dynamics, Nayar shed light on the strategic thinking behind India's opening combinations. He explained that the team heavily values maintaining a left-right batting tandem at the top of the order. This specific tactical blueprint helps neutralize opposition bowling strategies, such as preventing clever off-spinners like New Zealand's Michael Bracewell from dictating terms and bowling out their quota during the restrictive powerplay overs. Ultimately, Nayar stressed that the selection puzzle is less about a direct rivalry between Sooryavanshi and Samson, and more about preserving crucial tactical matchups at the crease.

"But as long as there is a left-hander at No. 3 and at the top, you will always think that a right-hander in between is necessary. So, it is not so much about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson; it is about having that left-right combination so that a bowler like Michael Bracewell does not come and bowl out his overs in the powerplay," he added.

As India transitions its focus to the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, which is slated to kick off October 22, the spotlight will once again turn to the team sheet. Will the management rotate their resources and give the youngster a long-awaited run, or will Sanju Samson retain the gloves and opening slot?

For now, Sooryavanshi must heed Iyer and Nayar's advices, continuing to hone his craft in the nets, remaining mentally prepared, and waiting for that inevitable breakthrough when opportunity knocks on international doors once again.
