In a spectacular display of fast bowling Mohammed Siraj scripted history during the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka in Colombo steering India towards the coveted title with a game-changing over on Sunday.
Siraj ran riot on Sri Lankan batters and began his onslaught with the dismissal of Pathum Nissanka for a mere two runs off his very first ball. But he wasn't done just yet. The next to fall under his searing pace was Sadeera Samarawickrama, quickly followed by Charith Asalanka, leaving the Sri Lankan camp in disarray. Siraj's momentum culminated in the final ball of the over, claiming the wicket of Dhananjaya de Silva, making him the first Indian bowler to bag four wickets within an over in the ODI format.
This whirlwind performance saw Sri Lanka stumbling at a precarious position of 12/5, marking it as the second-lowest team score recorded at the fall of the fifth wicket in an ODI championship final.
But Mohammed Siraj's hunger for wickets was insatiable. Returning in the sixth over, he clinched his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs, casting aside the Sri Lankan captain, Dasun Shanaka, without allowing him to score. This left the hosts further crippled at 12 for 6 within the initial 5.4 overs.
In a riveting twist to the tale, Siraj's quickfire wicket-taking spree put him alongside the legendary Sri Lankan seamer, Chaminda Vaas. He now shares the accolade of achieving the joint fastest five-wicket haul in ODI cricket – a record previously set by Vaas during the 2003 World Cup against Bangladesh, where he took five wickets in 16 deliveries.
Mohammed Siraj's mesmerising performance in Colombo will long be remembered as a key moment that potentially sealed India's grip on the Asia Cup 2023 title, demonstrating the potency of the Indian bowling attack on the grandest of stages.
Siraj's carnage-filled spell earned him an impressive bowling figure of 6/21 as Sri Lankan team was bundled out for a paltry total of 50, which is the lowest in the India vs Sri Lanka's ODI encounters as of date.
