Green Park, Lucknow will host its first Test match since November 2021. Fans are expected to flock the stadium to catch their favourite cricketers in action. However, the stadium does not seem to be ready for the big stage at the eleventh hour and the repair work is still underway.
As per a report by the Indian Express, the Stand C at the stadium has been 'deemed dangerous' by the Uttar Pradesh Public Work Department (UP PWD). As a result, the stand will be occupied partially by fans to avoid any unfortunate incident.
“The PWD has raised some issues and we have agreed that we will not sell all the tickets of Balcony C,” UPCA CEO Ankit Chatterjee said.
“We have been told to sell only 1700 tickets for the stand, which has a capacity of 4,800. The repair work will continue for the next couple of days,” he added.
Too fragile to celebrate a six
The PWD officials believe that if an excited crowd jumps to celebrate a six off in-form Rishabh Pant's bat, it may not be able to take their weight.
“This stand won’t be able to take the weight of even 50 fans if they start jumping after Rishabh Pant hits a six. This part of the stadium is in dire need of repair,” the PWD engineer told the English daily.
Floodlights cause headache too
In addition, the floodlights of the stadium aren't working properly and at least eight bulbs need to be repaired or replaced. The malfunctioning floodlights may have an effect on the game in the last sessions. The last Test played at the venue was between India and New Zealand. India needed one wicket to win but Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel were able to pull off a draw as there wasn’t enough light to extend play.
Not under UPCA
Notably, the Green Park Stadium is owned by the state government's sports department. This is a major reason behind why the facilities at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow are far better.
