India's designated no.4 batter Shreyas Iyer was the second-highest run-scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In the spin-friendly conditions of Dubai, Iyer did well to tackle the spinners and often negated the effects of the short ball plan formulated by the opposition for most of the time. After helping India lift the Champions Trophy, Iyer does not want to fuss over whether he will be selected in the Test squad or not.
"I want to play as much as I can. I have done well in the domestic tournaments but let's see what happens. I don't want to think too much about it because the more I think, more mind will be taxed. It will basically get tired. I live in the moment, maze karta hu [I enjoy] and think about the match when it comes. I don't think too much about [the] future or past. It has helped me a lot," Iyer told TOI.
Iyer's Ranji performance in last season
In the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, Iyer played five matches. The Mumbai batter scored 480 runs from seven innings averaging 68.57. He scored two centuries in the red-ball season. Also, his strike rate of 90.22 stood out of the lot. However, the Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai could not go on to win the title as they were beaten by Vidarbha in the semifinal in the absence of Iyer.
Iyer's last Test appearance and continued snubs
The 30-year-old's last Test appearance was against England at home in February 2024. He registered scores of 27 and 29 as he could not convert starts into big knocks. Since then, Iyer has been missing from the Test squad. In the home season, he was not picked for the Bangladesh series or against New Zealand. He did not travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 either.
While Iyer's focus will be on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), it will be interesting to see whether the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee give the experienced Mumbai batter another chance in Test cricket and pick him for the five-Test series against England starting June 20.
Iyer's Test numbers
Iyer has played 14 Tests and scored 811 runs at an average of 36.85, including one century and five half-centuries. His last Test fifty came against Bangladesh in December 2022.
