Bumrah's injury woes started from the final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The premier pacer sustained the back injury during the first innings of the match curtailing his participation. Having bowled extensively throughout the preceding four matches of the series, accumulating approximately 140 overs, Bumrah was limited to just 10 overs in the final Test. The onset of back pain forced him to withdraw from the remainder of the game.

The injury proved to be more severe than initially anticipated, resulting in Bumrah's exclusion from both the subsequent series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Despite initially being named in the squad for the Champions Trophy, medical evaluations ultimately determined that he was not fit to compete and hence he was ruled out of the eight-team tournament, handing a major setback to Team India.

Recently, Bumrah made an appearance in Dubai during the India vs. Pakistan group-stage match in the Champions Trophy. He was present to receive his ICC awards, having been honored as Cricketer of the Year and Test Player of the Year for 2024. Prior to the match, he interacted with the Indian team on the field, providing an update on his recovery and expressing that his back was showing good improvement.

Prior to the Champions Trophy, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had expressed optimism regarding Jasprit Bumrah's return to fitness. During a press conference before the bilateral series against England, Agarkar indicated that the pacer was expected to be available for the ODI series. However, Bumrah's recovery did not progress as anticipated, and he was subsequently ruled out of both the England series and the Champions Trophy.

Now, Bumrah's focus shifts towards regaining full fitness before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, scheduled to start on March 22. If he successfully recovers, he is expected to represent the Mumbai Indians in their opening match against the Chennai Super Kings on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
