Mohammed Shami has finally made his international comeback after a long injury layoff while Yashasvi Jaiswal remained absent from the squad. While Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side, Axar Patel be seen in his deputy role. Notably, India and England are set to play a five-match T20I series followed by three ODIs.
Mohammed Sharma returns, India's T20I squad for series vs England announced
"The Men’s Selection Committee has picked India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming IDFC First Bank five-match T20I series against England starting from 22nd January in Kolkata," BCCI's press release read.
Mohammed Shami returned to the fold after a 14-month absence from international cricket. Shami last represented India during the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup. He is expected to regain match fitness ahead of the upcoming ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Meanwhile, key members of the Indian Test team who were in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025 squad, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, have been rested for this series. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy have been recalled to the squad. Notably, Dhruv Jurel has been included in the squad, replacing Jitesh Sharma as the second wicket-keeper behind Sanju Samson.
India largely retained the core group of players from the recent series against South Africa. Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel were selected as the two wicket-keeping options. Nitish Reddy made a return to the squad after being overlooked for the South Africa series due to his involvement in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His inclusion came at the expense of pace all-rounder Shivam Dube, who missed the previous T20I series due to injury. The spin department featured a three-pronged attack consisting of Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, and Ravi Bishnoi. Notably, Kuldeep Yadav was not included in the squad.
India’s squad for T20I series against England:
Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (vc), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel (wk).
