In a huge blow after the ODI series loss to India, England's young all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Skipper Jos Buttler shared the disappointing news in the post-match press conference in Cuttack on February 9.

"I'm pretty sure he's been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest," Buttler said after the four-wicket defeat against Rohit Sharma-led side.

"So, that's really disappointing for him. Obviously, he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players. So, it's a shame that the injury is going to rule him out."

Bethell sustained a left hamstring injury during the first ODI in Nagpur. The 21-year-old struggled in the T20I series and registered scores of 7, 6 and 10. He came back well in the ODI series and scored 51 runs. The left-arm spinner also got the wicket of Shreyas Iyer.

Bethell's replacement in ODI squad

England's fiery top-order batter Tom Banton was called in as cover for third and final ODI of the series on February 9. Banton has been backed by selectors after a long gap of four years. The reason behind Banton's comeback is his spendid performances in the recently-concluded ILT20 2025. where he scored 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77 featuring two centuries.

It is yet to be seen where Banton will bat in this England side. The third ODI of the series at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, is a dead rubber. England may look to check if Banton can carry forward his T20 form to the ODI circuit ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and the UAE.
