New Zealand's veteran batter Kane Williamson fell victim to a bizarre dismissal on Day 1 of the third Test against England at Seddon Park, Hamilton on December 14. Williamson looked well-settled for a big score but in the second session, his defense was not rock solid against Matthew Potts. The ball bounced and wriggled back to the stumps. Williamson tried his best but ended up not kicking it away from the stumps. He was in disbelief as he got bowled.
The incident took place in the 59th over, Williamson hit a boundary and it was followed up by four dot balls. Williamson wanted to defend another ball but ended up getting out in an unfortunate manner.
He scored 44 runs from 87 balls including nine fours. New Zealand were 185/4 after 59 overs. He had to drag himself off the ground to the dressing room. He did the hard yards and then got out in a bizarre fashion.
Solid opening partnership
Earlier, Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first. New Zealand got off to a good start with Tom Latham and Will Young sharing a 105-run partnership. Gus Atkinson broke the partnership in the 31st over with Young's wicket. He scored 42 runs from 92 balls. Latham scored his half-century. Matthew Potts got rid of him in the 45th over. The captain scored 63 runs from 135 balls.
Kiwi suffer collapse
Rachin Ravindra (18), Daryl Mitchell (14), Tom Blundell (21) and Glenn Phillips (5) fell cheaply. Matt Henry could not do much either as Harry Brook took a fantastic catch at fine leg boundary. Tim Southee who is playing his last Test entertained the crowd with a 10-ball 23 cameo featuring three sixes.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner had launched a counterattack and reached his fifty with a six off the final ball of the day's play. He remained unbeaten for 50 off 54 balls as New Zealand finished with 315/9 on the board from 82 overs.
For England, Potts and Atkinson took three wickets each. Brydon Carse took a couple of wickets whereas Stokes claimed one.
No chance for WTC final
Both England and New Zealand have been ruled out of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final race. They are placed fifth and sixth on the table respectively.
