South Africa pulled off a record win in the second ODI of the three-ODI series against England at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein. In the run chase of 343, Temba Bavuma was playing the perfect captain's knock when the camera panned to a spectator who fell asleep in the stands.
The incident took place in the 25th over of the hosts' run chase. Bavuma was batting on 96 about to end his drought of centuries. Adil Rashid was about to bowl his fifth over after going for 31 in the first four.
The cameraperson spotted a spectator who was taking a nap on the chair. The spectators saw the camera on them and cheered which woke him up. When he realised what had happened, he spread his arms wide to acknowledge everyone.
In the next over, Bavuma got to his century and became third South African captain to score a century against England in successful run chase. Bavuma lost his wicket to Sam Curran after scoring 109. Despite Bavuma’s wicket, David Miller's unbeaten 37-ball 58, Aiden Markram's 43-ball 49 and cameos from Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen helped South Africa chase down the target with five balls to spare.
Earlier, Bavuma won the toss and opted to field first. Jason Roy fell for only nine after scoring a century in the first ODI. Dawid Malan (12) also failed, but Harry Brook and Jos Buttler put on 73 runs for the fourth wicket.
Brook raced to his half-century before falling to Markram and Moeen Ali (51) kept England ticking along nicely with his skipper until he played on to a delivery from Anrich Nortje.
Buttler (94*) and Curran (28 off 17) cut loose as the world champions took 60 off the last four overs to seemingly take the upper hand and post 342/7.
With a five-wicket win in the second ODI, South Africa have taken an unassailable lead in the series. The last ODI of the series will be played on February 1 at Diamond Oval, Kimberley as Buttler's brigade would look to register a consolation win.
