Gambhir asserted that such traditions of rewarding players existed before also but since social media is more prevalent nowadays, it has come into public eye. India's stunning performance in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, winning all eight league matches so far, has amplified the attention surrounding the ‘Fielder of the Match’ medal ceremony. It has seen fans and experts lauding the team's leadership and the camaraderie amongst them.
Team India is the hot-favourites to clinch the ODI World Cup 2023 title, given their unbeaten streak in the tournament so far. So far India have played eight matches in the ongoing World Cup and have emerged victorious in all of them due to which they became the first team to qualify for the semifinals.
“These traditions existed earlier as well. Because of social media, you get to watch a lot of content these days - what is happening in the dressing room, what kind of celebrations are taking place. This was not the case earlier because so much content was not available on digital media. During our times as well, the best fielders used to get medals and were rewarded. The best bowler and Player of the Match was also rewarded," Gambhir told Sportskeeda.
“All these things used to happen earlier as well. But because stuff never came out, people did not know about it. Today, things are out in the open. Earlier, a lot of things were confidential. In the IPL as well it happens, where the Player of the Match is different from the dressing room’s Man of the Match. These things are very normal and common,” Gambhir added.
Meanwhile, Gambhir also gave his final verdict on Men in Blue's chances of winning the World Cup 2023 title. Notably, India are looking to end their 10-year-long rut of ICC title as they last won in 2013 in the Champions trophy. Gambhir said that India have a serious chance of winning the World Cup 2023 title, even better than 2015 and 2019 editions.
“India’s chances of winning the 2023 World Cup are high, even better than in 2015 and 2019. This is because the team reflects the leader’s style—they admire and follow the leader. If Rohit Sharma had focused on batting longer, he could have scored 3-4 centuries in this World Cup,” Gambhir opined.
“In a major tournament like this, records don’t hold much significance. You accumulate records in bilateral matches. Your true legacy is shaped by the number of trophies you bring home. This team possesses all the elements needed to clinch the World Cup. If they fall short, it would be a significant disappointment,” Gambhir, who played 242 international matches and amassed 10324 runs riding on 20 hundreds and 63 fifties, concluded.
