Sanju Samson hailed 'Fire and Fire' partnership with Abhishek Sharma after India's T20 World Cup title glory

While Samson hammered a 46-ball 89, Abhishek tonked a 21-ball 52 in the final vs New Zealand

During an appearance at the India Today Conclave 2026, Sanju Samson shared some lighthearted insights into his dynamic opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma. Samson talked about his on-the-field partnership with the flamboyant southpaw. He said that their collaboration isn't a 'fire and ice' dynamic, rather a 'fire and fire' combination. This explosive chemistry proved to be a deciding factor during the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand, where their synergy at the top of the order set the tone for the title clash.

The duo’s impact was most evident during the tournament's summit clash, where they dismantled the opposition bowling attack to put on a 98-run opening stand. While Samson hammered a 46-ball 89, Abhishek tonked a 21-ball 52 in the final. This aggressive powerplay performance provided the perfect platform for the rest of the Indian lineup to capitalise, eventually leading to a massive total of 255 runs. Samson noted that this high-octane start was the result of a rapport they have been building since 2024, grounded in a clear understanding of their collective potential.

We have a Kerala-Punjabi friendship in the middle: Samson on explosive partnership with Abhishek

Reflecting on their success, Samson attributed their on-field efficiency to a deep-rooted friendship that exists away from the game. He explained that their close personal bond helps keep their communication simple and effective during high-pressure matches. Because they are so in sync off the field, they are able to play with a level of freedom and mutual trust that has turned them into one of the most formidable opening pairs in international cricket.

"We are not ice and fire, we are fire and fire. Sometimes he fires, sometimes I do. We have that kind of combination going. We have done this since 2024, we have a Kerala-Punjabi friendship in the middle. Everything comes pretty naturally to us, so we do not complicate it. He asks me, 'How is the ball coming?' I tell him that the ball is coming normally, hit it for a six. It is really simple with him. Abhishek is very brave and collected, I love his character. I really love the partnership with him on and off the field," Samson said.

Samson, Abhishek's key role in India's T20 World Cup 2026 title triumph

The T20 World Cup 2026 served as a stage for remarkable personal redemptions for both Samson and Abhishek. Entering the tournament, Samson dealt a big setback when a sudden dip in form cost him his spot in the starting lineup, leaving him on the sidelines as the event began. Similarly, Abhishek encountered his own hurdles, as an early bout of illness during the opening games hampered his physical condition and prevented him from finding his rhythm during the initial stages.

The narrative shifted dramatically as the tournament progressed and Samson was reintegrated into the side for the final four matches. He seized the opportunity with a string of exceptional performances, becoming a primary architect of India’s victories during the knockout phase. His resurgence provided the stability and spark the middle order needed at the most critical juncture of the competition.

Abhishek’s comeback reached its pinnacle in the summit clash. Despite struggling with form and health throughout the earlier rounds, he delivered a vintage performance when it mattered most. His fiery fifty set the stage for a big total for the Men in Blue, who eventually ended up lifting the historic title.
