Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has recently put forward a significant assertion regarding Shreyas Iyer's potential future in Indian cricket. Uthappa believes that Iyer could be a strong candidate for the captaincy of India's white-ball team, provided he maintains his current form, particularly in his batting at the number four position.

Shreyas Iyer's performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has been noteworthy, garnering attention for his remarkable batting prowess. His standout innings against the Netherlands, where he scored 128 runs from just 94 deliveries, showcased his ability to score both rapidly and efficiently. This innings was marked by a blend of boundaries and sixes, along with a notably low percentage of dot balls, demonstrating his proactive and aggressive approach at the crease.
Furthermore, Iyer's development in handling short-pitched deliveries has been a subject of praise. Mohammad Kaif, another former Indian cricketer, observed that Iyer has significantly improved in dealing with bouncers, indicating a refinement in his batting technique. Kaif also highlighted Iyer's crucial role in the Indian batting lineup, especially in the context of high-pressure games like the semi-final against New Zealand.
Shreyas Iyer has made a record by scoring over 400 runs in the tournament, the highest tally by any Indian middle-order batsman in World Cup history.
On his YouTube channel, Uthappa commended Iyer for his dedication to improving his game, particularly in overcoming his vulnerabilities against short balls. Uthappa emphasized that Iyer's solid performance at the number four spot has been the result of considerable hard work. He expressed that if Iyer continues to display such form, it wouldn't be surprising to see him ascend to the role of captain for India in white-ball formats.
"Whatever was said about his issues with the short ball, he has shown he has put in a lot of hard work and he seems to be confident as well. He looks very very good. He looks very good at No.4. If he continues to perform this way, I won't be surprised if he becomes the captain of the Indian side. Especially in white-ball cricket," said Uthappa.
Uthappa's comments reflect the high regard in which Iyer's skills and potential are held within the cricketing community, suggesting a bright future for him in Indian cricket, both as a player and potentially as a leader.
