Team India stylish batter Shubman Gill has been admitted to a hospital in Chennai after the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that the 24-year-old hasn't traveled to Delhi with the rest of the squad. According to a report in Cricbuzz, Gill's platelet count has been low for quite some time and he is currently under the supervision of medical specialists at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. The Indian cricket board released a medical update on Gill on October 9 (Monday) where it shed light on the batter's condition and also confirmed his absence from the country's upcoming fixture against Afghanistan, scheduled to take place on October 11 (Wednesday) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

"Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team's first fixture in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team's next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team," the BCCI statement said.

If and when Gill's health improves, he will be discharged from the hospital and shifted back to the hotel. But right now as things stand, the young in-form batter is facing the prospect of missing more than the match against Afghanistan on Wednesday. India is scheduled to face arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. If Gill recovers quickly, he might then fly straight to Ahmedabad from Chennai.

In Gill's absence, India's top order failed miserably against Australia in the country's opening ODI World Cup fixture. Gill's replacement Ishan Kishan was out for a golden duck while Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer too were dismissed before they could bet off the mark in Chennai.
