Veteran Sri Lanka batter Angelo Mathews, who was the victim of a controversial dismissal during the World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in the World Cup 2023 on Monday, November 6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, has claimed that he was wrongly 'timed out'.

He shared video evidence as proof of the same, claiming that he was wrongly dismissed, saying that he had five seconds left before he faced issues with his helmet.

"Fourth umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the 4th umpire rectify this please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn't face the bowler without a helmet," Mathews wrote on x.com.

During the first innings, the controversial decision unfolded as Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out ruling against Sri Lanka's Mathews. The latter's broken helmet strap reportedly caused a delay of over two minutes before he could face his first ball.

Mathews argued that the helmet malfunctioned during his adjustment, not before stepping onto the field. Despite his efforts, Mathews was forced to exit without taking a single delivery, sparking a charged moment. This incident injected vigour into the otherwise subdued match, leading Mathews to engage in a conversation with Shakib, urging him to confer with the umpires.

Meanwhile, speaking about the incident, the fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock believes that the batter should have all the proper equipment ready when on the field, instead of wasting time.

"As a batter, you need to make sure that you have all your equipment in place. You have to be ready to receive the ball within two minutes. So technically, you should be there within maybe 50 seconds to make sure all those things are in place before you actually receive the ball," concluded the fourth umpire.
