Sri Lanka faced a significant setback in their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages, suffering their fifth defeat in seven matches, which placed them in a challenging position.

The Sri Lankan team's pursuit began disastrously, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming a wicket on the very first delivery, and Mohammed Siraj securing the next three wickets, leaving them reeling at a precarious four for three runs.

Mohammed Shami's entry into the attack resulted in a remarkable five-wicket haul, further solidifying India's dominant performance. Shami concluded with impressive figures of 5-18, while Siraj contributed with 3-16, leading to Sri Lanka's dismissal for a paltry 55 runs, marking their lowest total in a 50-over World Cup match.

In the first innings, India's Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill showcased commanding performances, each scoring half-centuries and building a formidable second-wicket partnership of 189 runs, enabling the hosts to achieve a total of 357 for eight.

Despite the quick dismissals of Kohli and Gill by left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka, India's number four batter, Shreyas Iyer, injected late energy into the innings with a stunning 56-ball 82.
