There is mounting speculation about the future of Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill in the team.

Recent reports suggest a fierce battle for the vice-captaincy between Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya.

Tuesday (April 30) promises to be a pivotal day for cricket fans across India as all eyes turn to the BCCI's chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who is set to finalise the 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. Agarkar, along with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and captain Rohit Sharma, will convene in Ahmedabad for a critical meeting to decide the lineup for the tournament, which will be hosted by the West Indies and the United States.

The selection meeting is expected to be intensely scrutinised, particularly because it could mark the end of the era for Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This World Cup might well be the last T20I outing for both players, adding a layer of urgency to the selection process.

Who will be Rohit Sharma's deputy?

Amid this backdrop, there is mounting speculation about the future of Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill in the team. Recent reports suggest a fierce battle for the vice-captaincy between Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, highlighting the dynamics and potential shifts within the team hierarchy. Pant, who has made a robust return to form following a serious car accident, appears to be a front-runner for the leadership role, given his recent performances and leadership qualities.

The selection dilemma for Agarkar and his committee will not merely focus on form and fitness but also take into consideration the unique playing conditions in the USA and the West Indies. These venues offer different challenges and opportunities, which will require a carefully balanced squad capable of adapting to varied pitches and weather conditions.

Concerns about Hardik Pandya's form

One of the more concerning narratives this season has been Hardik Pandya's form. Since his return from injury, Pandya has struggled to regain the all-round prowess that once made him a critical asset to the team. In the ongoing IPL season, his performance has been underwhelming, with an average of just 24 and a highest score of 46 across nine matches. Furthermore, his bowling has not redeemed his lackluster batting, capturing only four wickets in 36 overs while conceding runs at an economy rate of 11 runs per over.

Shubman Gill as backup opener

In contrast, the selectors are reportedly considering Shubman Gill as a potential backup opener, despite his difficulties in securing a regular spot in the playing XI. This reflects a broader strategy to integrate younger talent into the team, preparing for a future beyond the era of Kohli and Sharma.

Last run for Rohit and Virat in T20I format

The focus on Kohli and Sharma is particularly intense, given their immense contributions to Indian cricket over the years. Both players are among the most senior and celebrated members of the team, yet their careers have been marked recently by discussions around their suitability in the T20 format, especially considering Kohli's struggles with strike rates and Sharma's inability to secure an ICC trophy under his captaincy.

Kohli, however, has responded to critics with a strong performance in the IPL 2024, leading the run-scoring charts and demonstrating that his batting prowess remains undimmed. This resurgence could well tilt the selection in his favor, providing him with a potentially grand stage to conclude his T20I career.
